Volunteer in Africa

There is a huge range of voluntary opportunities in Africa from desert elephant conservation work through to building local classrooms. Most projects are run through a larger organisation, although many are small scale projects run in Africa. If wildlife, and in particular, BIG animals are your thing, Africa should be your first choice for conservation volunteering . Rhinos, elephants, big cats, turtles and gorillas are all threatened species and there are many worthwhile projects based in Africa monitoring and actively protecting these animals.720705_lioness_2.jpg

Community development work such as HIV and AIDS awareness, assisting with water education and well building or looking after sick children are also key areas that volunteers can participate in. Finally volunteer teachers are also sought after in areas of Africa.

There is some controversy about the benefits of volunteering, particularly in Africa. Many say "aid" takes away the impetus of local people to try to help themselves plus a volunteer takes away the need (and the want) to employ a local person.

We say things are not as clear cut as that. Each situation is different. Africa is not going to heal overnight and the problems run a lot deeper than Westerners wanting to find out more about the issues and try to play their part in helping the continent.

We recommend, before embarking on any placement in Africa;

  • Find out why the project has been set up and how long it has been running for
  • Does it employ local people?
  • How much of your money goes directly back into the project?
  • Why do they need volunteers?

743529_faces_of__africa_1.jpgThink about how you would make a difference. The key benefit of any volunteer to a project is that they contribute something extra. If you have IT or writing skills for example, these can benefit a project tremendously where a skill shortage in these areas may be present. The other issue is the length of time you are prepared to give. A volunteer staying six months or more will contribute (and get out) a lot more than someone staying two weeks only.

  • Conservation Volunteering  ( 1 items )
    There are hundreds of organisations needing help with conservation projects. The three main conservation sectors include;
    • Marine
    • Wildlife
    • Land

    261037_shark_-_ushaka_marine_world.jpgMarine projects could include surveying coral reefs, assessing the impact of overfishing, looking after injured seals or protecting sea turtles. We even know of a great white shark project.

    Wildlife conservation projects are just as diverse - desert elephant tracking in Namibia, tiger rehabilitation in Thailand or surveying orangutans and monitoring logging in Borneo.

    Land conservation projects could include surveying the Amazon rainforest, clearing and coppicing non-indigenous plants in Australia or working with local farmers in Bolivia cultivating sustainable farming techniques.
    Most conservation projects have an element of human interaction too as the work done by organisations needed to be promoted to the local communities, so if you like teaching but have an interest in conservation, you could find something in this line of work.
    As well as hands on field research, conservation projects often need office help such as designing leaflets, inputting data or teaching local people IT skills.
    To help you choose, think about where in the world you would like to volunteer too - if you like warm climates, you probably won't get on very well working on wolf field research in Siberia. Conservation placements can be incredibly diverse, so its important to work out what you would enjoy and what you would be good at.

    If animals are your thing, our database also contains hundreds of projects working in a zoo, helping qualified veterinarians with their work and assisting in rehabilitation centres.
    If you are a qualified vet, we also have a number of projects that need your help.

  • Volunteer in South and Central America  ( 1 items )
     It's vibrant. It's colourful. It's charming.

    South and Central America contain the most diverse landscapes and friendly people in the world. Plus if you want to learn Spanish (technically Portuguese) you're in the right place.

    The cities of South and Central America are just as intriguing. Buenos Aires and Rio are just two cities that are a must in these regions.

    Visit our South America and Central America section to find out more about this region.

    Volunteer options are well known in Costa Rica but there are many other opportunities in other countries. Try Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina or Bolivia.
