There are hundreds of organisations needing help with conservation projects. The three main conservation sectors include;
  • Marine
  • Wildlife
  • Land

261037_shark_-_ushaka_marine_world.jpgMarine projects could include surveying coral reefs, assessing the impact of overfishing, looking after injured seals or protecting sea turtles. We even know of a great white shark project.

Wildlife conservation projects are just as diverse - desert elephant tracking in Namibia, tiger rehabilitation in Thailand or surveying orangutans and monitoring logging in Borneo.

Land conservation projects could include surveying the Amazon rainforest, clearing and coppicing non-indigenous plants in Australia or working with local farmers in Bolivia cultivating sustainable farming techniques.
Most conservation projects have an element of human interaction too as the work done by organisations needed to be promoted to the local communities, so if you like teaching but have an interest in conservation, you could find something in this line of work.
As well as hands on field research, conservation projects often need office help such as designing leaflets, inputting data or teaching local people IT skills.
To help you choose, think about where in the world you would like to volunteer too - if you like warm climates, you probably won't get on very well working on wolf field research in Siberia. Conservation placements can be incredibly diverse, so its important to work out what you would enjoy and what you would be good at.

If animals are your thing, our database also contains hundreds of projects working in a zoo, helping qualified veterinarians with their work and assisting in rehabilitation centres.
If you are a qualified vet, we also have a number of projects that need your help.
